Jury Selection Under Way In Teacher's Sex Trial

After numerous delays the trial of a South Florida teacher accused of giving a student money and drugs in exchange for sex is finally underway.

Beth Friedman, along with her psychologist, spent the day in a Broward County courtroom Monday. Lawyers began questioning prospective jurors in the trial of the former North Lauderdale teacher.

Hollywood police arrested Friedman in August of 1999 for indecent assault on a child after she was accused of having sex with a 14-year-old while other students watched.

The victim's mother spoke to Channel 10 News about the incident, but asked to have her identity protected.

"Here I put faith, my trust in a professional person and then what does she do? She turns around and destroys my faith," the victim's mother said. "So it's pretty hard for me to function and go ahead and deal. I have another child that's in school. How do I trust the school system now?"

Investigators also accuse Friedman of offering the student money to get her pregnant.

For months Friedman's lawyers claimed she was not emotionally fit to stand trial, but now she will face the charges.
